Why are the bats breaking so readily the last few years in pro baseball ?
it just seems more prevalent… certainly there are not THAT many overpowering pitchers anymore… is it different wood or what ??
Total bat breakage is only slightly higher than ten or fifteen years ago. The real answer is simple. The wood selected today as MLB grade would not have passed as MLB grade even ten years ago. Players used to be able to get older wood and be more particular on the grain of the wood. Players of the early game would spend hours picking a bat out. Thus company’s would spend long periods of time looking for the right grain to make billets from. (Billets are the square piece of wood that a bat gets lathed from.) In today’s modern society the sources for wood are getting slimmer and slimmer. No longer can Rawlings or any other major bat manufacturer go find virgin forests to select from. There has been great strides in the farming of these trees… yet the wood (Tree) is still turned much quicker not allowing for more mature selection. This is why companies like Brett Brothers have gone to composites. They can take an average grain and make it into smaller pieces (20 smaller square pieces) and then put them together to make a billet… similar to a glue-lam beam in construction. This makes a stronger bat and utilizes wood that is average (not major league grade) and creates a high quality bat that is stronger than MLB standards. The big bat companies are against the composite since it would slow down bat breakage thus effect sales.
